[Men's Outdoor Track & Field] SAU's Nathan Martin appears in Sports Illustrated, Faces in ...Published by
The cover of the June 17, 2013 edition of Sports Illustrated Magazine features the Detroit Tigers' Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. The Magazine's headline says that the "Bash Bros" are the 21st-Century version of Mantle and Maris. One of the popular features in the Magazine is a long-standing tradition of Faces in the Crowd, and Spring Arbor University's Nathan Martin is one of those faces in this issue's crowd. Martin's heroics at the recent NAIA Track and Field National Championships are highlighted in the National weekly publication along with five other standout amateur athletes. The article reads; Martin, a senior at Spring Arbor (Mich.) University, won the marathon at the NAIA national championships with a time of 2:19:18.70 to break the 28-year-old NAIA record by 1:49.52. It was his first marathon. He also won the 10,000 meters in 29:57.79 to become the second runner to win both events at nationals in the same year. In April, Martin broke a 37-year-old school mark in the 5,000 meters with a 13:52.70 finish at the Mt. SAC Relays, which ranked 23rd in the open field of 29 elite runners. The other five athletes included three high school athletes from Bellevue, NE., Irvine, CA, and Smith Falls, Ontario, and two collegiate athletes from Ohio State University, and Minnesota State.
