[Men's Tennis] Men's Tennis Drops Tough Match to Huntington, Rained Out vs. Goshen

Comments

In tennis action today at Goshen College, the Cornerstone Men's Tennis Team fell to 2-1 on the season with a 5-4 loss to Huntington University.  Huntington picked up the early lead, winning at #1 Doubles, but CU evened the match with a win at #3 Doubles.  The #2 Doubles tandem of Chris Reed & Andrew Son were serving up a break 5-4, but Huntington wouldn't be denied winning that crucial match 8-5.  In singles action, Cornerstone got wins from Chris Reed, Andrew Son, & Alex Tarnow, with Elijah Yi & John Andrew falling.  The match came down to a 3rd set at #2 singles, with the team score tied at 4-4.  Austin Hunt won the second set to send the match into the deciding thrid set.  However, with rain beginning to fall, the decision was made to use a 10 point tie-breaker in lieu of a thrid set in order to finish before the rain got worse.  Hunt led throughout the tie-breaker, but Huntington's Joseph Straznicky went on a late run and closed the match out 10-8.  Said Coach Erickson on today's action:  "This is a really tough loss for us.  We had chances to win on two of the courts we lost, and were only 2 points away from winning in Austin's match, but ultimately we fell short.  Huntington is a really solid team, currently leading their conference, so it would have been very nice to get a win against them.  We are going to find ourselves in a lot of close matches this year, just as we did last year, and we need to figure out a way to get over the hump and start winning them."

Cornerstone was scheduled to play a double header, with the second match coming against Goshen College.  However, due to the rain that started at the end of the Huntington match, the match with Goshen was rained out.

Next up for Cornerstone is at #24 Davenport University on Tuesday September 10 in a night match starting at 6:00 pm.
