[Men's Outdoor Track & Field] Cardinals Open Season With 7 First Place Finishes!

Comments
(Saturday March 26th, Bowling Green, OH) - The sun was shining bright, the calendar said spring but the temperature and wind chill said winter. On a cold and blustery day the men's track team traveled to Bowling Green, Ohio on Saturday for their first outdoor track meet of the year. Even though the weather wasn't good the team performed well. The Cardinals MVP's from indoor season, juniors, Max Joseph and Martell Buchanan led the team to an excellent start to the outdoor season, both taking three first places.
Joseph started the day off with a first place finish in the long jump, jumping 5.62. Then he teamed up with Buchanan and freshmen, Rashad Smith and Caleb Mims to win the 4 x 100 meter relay with a time of 45.41.

"I was extremely pleased with how the guys did in the relay today," Coach Steve Montgomery said. "The hand-offs were excellent, and the guys ran really well considering the weather," he added. The same four guys teamed up later in the day to win the 4 x 200 meter as well. In addition, Buchanan won the 400 meter with a time of 52.9, Mims was second in the 100 Meter, while Smith was third in the 100 meter.
Winning the 100 meter dash was Cardinal freshmen, Brandon Head, with a time of 12.4. He later won the 200 meter dash, while freshmen, Cody Cotner placed third.

"Brandon had an outstanding day today," said Coach Montgomery. "The sprint team is really coming along. They are working hard and hopefully their times will be coming down in the weeks to come," he added.

Another group working hard this season is the throwers. Freshmen, Eric Frisco and Ethan Anderson placed second and third in the shot put, while junior, Nathan Alderson placed fifth in the discus and fourth in the javelin..

"Considering the conditions, these guys did pretty well today," said Coach Montgomery. "They had to throw the discus into the wind, which makes it a lot tougher," he added.

In the distance events junior, Will Cantrell took first place in the 1500 meter and second in the 2000 meter steeplechase. "Will ran one of his better races in the 1500 meter today," said Coach Montgomery. "He was really determined in the second part of the race, and it paid off," he added. Also running in the 1500 meter was freshmen, Andrew Belt.

Overall, it was a good day for the Cardinals, even in the cold and windy conditions. The team travels next to Michigan State University for the Spartan Invite on April 2nd.
