[Men's Outdoor Track & Field] Nathan Martin breaks Spring Arbor's 37 year old 5000m record ...

Comments

WALNUT, Calif – Spring Arbor University senior, Nathan Martin continues to rack up school records and one of the most elusive records on the books was the 5000m set in 1976 by Spring Arbor University Hall of Famer Tony Luttrell. 37 years ago, Luttrell set the 5000m record at 14:07.18.  Late last night, at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut California, Martin ran with the fastest runners in the country and propelled him to a finish of 13:52.70, bettering Luttrell's mark by 14.48 seconds.

To give people and idea of how good the field was, Martin was running in the 5000m Elite Open field of 29 runners and finished in 23rd place.  Will Leer of team NIKE won the event in a time of 13:21.55.  Eight runners in the field are Olympic qualifiers.

Martin is now the sole owner of four Spring Arbor records; the outdoor 5000m and 10,000m, and the indoor 3000m and 5000m runs.

Kyle Anderson also took the trip and ran a personal best in the 10,000m run.  Anderson improved his time by more than 20 seconds all while feeling under the weather.  His time of 31:33.59 is only 12 seconds shy of Martin's record time of 31:21.15 set in 2009.

The men's track & field team will compete at the Crossroads League Championship on April 26-27 at Huntington University before the NCCAA National and NAIA National Championships.  The NCCAA Meet will be held May 2-4 at Judson University in Joliet, IL and the NAIA meet is May 23-25 at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, IN.
